Wyvonnie Turner was born on May 4, 1937, in Warrenton, GA to the late Johnnie B. Carolina and Ossie Lee Ruff. Wyvonnie grew up in Catskill, NY and attended the Catskill Public School System. She became a member of AME Zion Church in Catskill, NY at an early age. Wyvonnie married William Turner, Jr. on February 26, 1955, and relocated to Coxsackie, NY where she became a member of Bethel AME Church. Wyvonnie and William had five children.
Wyvonnie and her family later returned to Catskill, NY where she became a member of Mt. Tabor AME Zion Church.
In 1977, Wyvonnie and her family relocated to Albany, NY. There she became a member of the Elijah Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Clemon McKnight and later Pastor Avery L. Comithier. She served her church faithfully as an usher for over 37 years and enjoyed working in that capacity.
Wyvonnie was employed at St. Peter’s Hospital and retired after 22 years of service.
Wyvonnie’s favorite pastimes included reading and sending birthday cards to her children, nieces, nephews & cousins. She also enjoyed gospel concerts, usher anniversary programs, and sending special notes and cards of encouragement to anyone she knew was going through sickness or difficult times.
She loved keeping in touch with her former co-workers and old friends, especially Josephine Johnson of Hudson, NY. In her apartment building, Wyvonnie was affectionately known as “Y” and enjoyed outings and volunteering at different functions arranged by her building. Her friends there are Clara Wright, Barbara Jean Walker, Bessie Williams, Frankie Valentine, James Brandon, & Gus Kirkley.
Wyvonnie leaves to cherish her memory her loving & devoted children, Rosalind Dolores Harris of Guilderland, NY, Grady Eugene Turner of Albany, NY, beloved son-in-law, Ernest Leamon Harris, Jr. of Guilderland, NY, a granddaughter, Rochelle Turner of Killeen, Texas, special friends Isaiah Hooks of Tupelo, Mississippi, Jeanette Williams of Albany, NY, James McCall of Ohio, and a host of nieces, nephews & cousins.
Wyvonnie was predeceased by her husband, William Turner, Jr., stepfather Grady Thomas, mother Ossie Thomas, mother-in-law Anna Turner, father-in-law William Turner, Sr., sons David William Turner, Carl Louis Turner, and Walter Anthony Turner, sisters-in-law Betty Turner and Gladys Walker-Smith, brothers-in-law Jack Turner, the Reverend Frank Turner & Walter Turner.
