William M. Shark Obituary

Deacon William Milford Shark, Sr., a beacon of service and devotion, entered into eternal rest on April 12, 2024. Born into the loving arms of Esias Shark and Mother Lula Grant-Shark on March 17, 1939, in Canadys, South Carolina.  Deacon Shark was a man whose heart encompassed boundless love and whose life was a testament to his faith and good humor.

From his early days in the Red Bank Methodist Church, William embraced the virtues of service and community, carrying these values throughout his life. His journey of service began when he left school in the eighth grade to join the Army, an unselfish noble act to support his family and country. He continued that life of service as a member of the National Guard for six years as well as an additional three years in the United States Air Force before retiring in 1955.

The constant call to serve led William to the bustling streets of New York City, where he joined the NYC Junior Police Department and later the Tactical Patrol Force. Even after the tragic loss of his dear friend and colleague; and despite the challenges faced during the tumultuous times of the 1960’s, William's commitment to justice never wavered.

While serving on the NYC Police Force, William met and married Florence Henderson Shark. Their union was blessed with two sons, William Jr. and James, enriching his life with joy and purpose.  Ever seeking opportunities to better his life and that of his family, William obtained his GED and pursued higher education, furthering his ability to serve and lead.

In search of a better life for his family, William relocated to Albany, NY, and laid down roots as a Charge Officer at the Office of Drug Abuse Services. His career in service continued with the NYS Capitol Police and 14 years with the Department of Correctional Service, where he retired as a Lieutenant. In the latter chapter of his life, he met and married Mary Watson-Shark.

Deacon Shark’s legacy of love, service, and faith was further nurtured at Metropolitan New Testament Mission Baptist Church and was ordained as a Deacon under the Pastorate of Reverend Dr. Damone Paul Johnson in November 2011.  Faithfully he served on the Edna L. Hamilton Global Mission and Home Mission Ministries.  He was also a staunch member of the Seasoned Saints Ministry, the Laymen’s Ministry and Assistant Director of Church Facilities under Deacon William Clay.

He loved quilting, gardening, and cooking, but most of all he enjoyed cooking what he grew in his garden.  He was a jack of all trades, and a master of anything he put his hands on.  If he didn’t know how to do something, he would study and research it until it became second nature to him.  He always made himself available for anyone who needed assistance.  Deacon Shark embodied the spirit of Christ and demonstrated the same.   “I’m just a NOBODY, Trying to Help ANYBODY because SOMEBODY saved and helped me “.  Deacon William Shark was called to serve and he served with love, decency, and integrity.  He served well.
