William Bess Obituary

William Bess, affectionately known as “Billy” or simply “Bess” to those who knew and loved him, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, surrounded by his devoted family.

Billy was born on February 14, 1942, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late William and Palestine Bess. A proud native of Baltimore, he was raised in the city and attended public elementary and middle schools before graduating from Frederick Douglass High School, where he shined on the basketball court and gained a reputation for his outstanding athletic talent.

After high school, Billy began working at Suburban Country Club before answering the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. Upon completing his service, he returned to civilian life and dedicated over 30 years of hard work to Sparrow Paint.

In 1995, Bess began a new chapter in Albany, New York, where he married the love of his life, Angela Terry. The two built a beautiful life together filled with love, laughter, and partnership.

Even in retirement, Bess remained active and worked in the meat department at Price Chopper for another 20 years, forming bonds with coworkers and customers alike.

Bess was known for his kind heart, generous nature, and infectious sense of humor. He was the kind of man who never met a stranger and made sure everyone around him felt remembered and loved. Holidays were never complete without a card or thoughtful gift from him — a small gesture that meant the world to many.

Above all, Bess was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather and great-grandfather, supportive brother, and loyal friend. His love extended far beyond his immediate family, embracing godchildren, longtime friends, and many others who became family through his boundless warmth.

Bess was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Barbara Avery, and his beloved daughter Cheryle Moore.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 30 years, Angela Terry Bess; his sons Dwon Bess Sr. (Melinda), William Bess Jr. of Baltimore, MD, LeBarron Gaddy of Albany,NY; his daughter Tonnjia Bess of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren Dwon Jr., Davon, Desyinera, Kiera, Kahlia, Keon, Maleak, Kayla, Xamir, Tiara, Travis, Tre, and Tyreese; and great-grandchildren Kehlani, Taige, Devyn, and Karson.

He is also survived by his sisters Maxine Bess and Kim Holt (Michael); his adopted son Eugene Bickley; godchildren Jacquelyn Seel and Manuel Bickley; and longtime special friends Arthur Seel and Eggie Sappington. Bess’ memory will be carried on by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were all touched by his light.

William Bess will be remembered not only for the life he lived, but for the love he gave so freely. He will be deeply missed, forever cherished, and never forgotten.
