Vernice ‘Vern’ Hughes passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at St. Peter’s Hospital. Vern was born in Albany, NY on February 1, 1957 to the late Mary Faulkner and Urit Hughes. She lived in Baltimore, MD and Oakland, CA before returning to Albany NY to settle down and raise her sons.
She worked with the Albany City School District, most recently in the maintenance department at Albany High School before retiring
in 2007.
Vern loved to read and stressed the importance of reading and education to her sons. Her favorite authors were Anne Rice and Stephen King. She enjoyed watching sci-fi and horror movies, the gorier the better! She enjoyed good company, good food, good music and anything Marvin Gaye! Vern loved to go out dancing and having a good time. She always had a kind word or shoulder to cry on for whoever needed it, but had no issues telling it like it is- whether you wanted to hear it or not. Vern’s love for children naturally progressed into her becoming a foster parent for Parsons Child & Family Services. She was loved and well respected as one of the neighborhood moms “down South Pearl”. Vern was a great cook and loved to prepare big meals for the holidays. She was well known for her desserts, especially the coconut cakes, sweet potato pies and cobblers. She is survived by her three sons Isaiah (Asia) Brown, Ronny Stumon, Tayler Blair; two granddaughters, A’siah Brown and Kyleigh Stumon; her sister Shiree Hughes and brothers Tyrone Hughes and D’juan Carter and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Vernice was preceded in death by her parents Mary Faulkner and Urit Hughes, her loving sisters Karen Joann Brown-Arrington and Naydean Arrington and her daughter-in-love Sheneka Stumon.
