Selima Callendar Waklatsi

Our dearest Selima Callendar Waklatsi, age 44, was born March 24, 1979, in Queens NY and sadly passed away on April 17, 2023, in Albany NY surrounded by many who loved her. Selima loved listening to music, reading and watching reality tv shows. Selima grew up attending Sojourner Truth AME Zion Church in Albany, NY. After attending Albany High School, Selima worked as a CNA at a local nursing home. Selima went on to working for many different places but really loved working at St. Catherine’s Center for Children where she worked for almost two decades. She was driven by a passion to help others and believed the world could always use one more kind-hearted person. She always brought a smile to everyone’s face. Selima loved to love people. Her hands were rarely still as she was always at the ready for her friends and family. She loved hosting events at her house. Selima was known to have many of her children’s friends to know her as “Ma’ because she showed them love but was going to check them if they were wrong. She also shared her love of food with her children and the community. Whether it was fried chicken, baked beans, Friday night fish fry or her renowned seafood salad, Selima always looked forward to cooking for the ones she loved.

She is survived by longtime partner Eric Cancer, Son’s Zacceus Cancer, Zyeef Cancer, Zion Cancer, daughter Za’Navia Cancer, granddaughters Za'Nyla Cancer and Zay'Lanii Cancer, mother Almeta Waklatsi, sister Matisha Newell, brothers Tyrone (Natarsha) Waklatsi, Steven Waklatsi, a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends that became family who will miss her so dearly.
