Samuel Brown, Jr. Obituary

Samuel “Sam” R. Brown, Jr. peacefully entered into eternal life with his loving family
by his side on Wednesday, June 2, 2021. Sam was born on February 8, 1951 to the late
Samuel and Ruth Brown in Brooklyn, New York.
Sam was educated in the New York City school system and later relocated to Albany,
NY where he made Albany his home. He attended Empire State College majoring in
Human Services. Sam was a man with principles and purpose. He had a heart for
people, especially for those struggling with substance abuse and addiction. His life’s
mission was working with men and women who wanted to change their lives to
become healthy human beings. Sam felt strongly that this type of work is needed in
our communities and worked his entire adult life to that end. Sam obtained
numerous certifications and training in alcoholism and substance abuse counseling,
as well as a certificate in computer technology.
Over the past 20 years, Sam worked in counseling and mental health services, holding
the positions of Alcohol Counselor for The Addiction Care Center of Albany, Inc;
Mental Health Therapy Aide for New York State Office of Mental Health; and as a
Primary Addiction Counselor for St. John’s Project Lift until his retirement in 2004.
In the late 1980’s, Sam met and married the love of his life, his late wife, Antonia
“Toni” Brown. Sam and Toni were married for 31 years. They were inseparable, and
together raised their beautiful family. They often made their home available for large
family gatherings, anyone who needed a place to stay, or just have something to eat.
Sam also enjoyed reading, traveling with his wife and most of all, his NY Yankees. He
was a faithful member of the Metropolitan New Testament Mission Baptist Church,
where he very much enjoyed participating in the Men’s ministry. Sam will be
remembered as a loving and committed husband, father, and grandfather.
Sam leaves to cherish his memory his daughters Samantha and Simone Brown of
Albany, NY; step-children Terrell Merritt of Troy, NY, Melyne (Vaughn) Howell of
Staten Island, NY and Tara Merritt of Albany, NY; brother Eddie Brown;
grandchildren Raymond, Latoya, Anthony and Infinity of Brooklyn, NY, Zaraya,
Antonaia, Isis, Kaziah, Kingston, Vaughan, King, Gabriel, and Evadne; great grandson
Zyrell; godchildren Samara, Wandejah, Shachira and Emmanuel; sister and brothers
in-law Marcia Chandler, Bill (Mittie) Rucker, Ronnie (Yoko) Rucker, Roger Rucker,
Garland Rucker, and Maurice Rucker; close friends Ron Butler and Pat Humbert; and
a host of nephews, nieces and friends.
Sam was preceded in death by his loving wife Antonia Brown, his daughter Selena
Walker, parents Samuel and Ruth Brown, father and mother in-law Winford and
Orlean Rucker, and two brothers in-law Winford and John Rucker.
