Rufus Turman, 71 passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 9th, 2022 at home. He was born to the late Roy Smith and Emily Turman in Willington, SC. In the late 1950s during the Great Northern Migration, Emily and John Tucker with family relocated from Willington, SC to Albany, NY for better employment, living conditions, and educational opportunities. Rufus was educated in the City of Albany’s Public Schools and while attending Albany High School Rufus earned credentials as a Certified Welder and graduated in 1971.
In his professional life, Rufus worked briefly for the State of New York Office of General Services. Ultimately, following his skill set, Rufus was hired as a Certified Welder and Machinist for General Electric Co. in Schenectady for over three decades; and was gainfully employed until retirement. Rufus was known for being an avid fisherman, and hunter. In addition, a Sporty Dresser showcasing his collection of colorful Alpaca Sweaters, Playboy Shoes, and Apple Jack & Stenson hats. Back in his Heyday, Rufus was identified by driving the First Bumblebee Yellow customized 1972 Volkswagen Beetle. Being soft-spoken was his demeanor, but you could hear him loud and clear while watching sports specifically baseball and you dare not interrupt him while his favorite game show, Jeopardy was on.

Seven Grandchildren: Janae Holmes, Dyshawn Fisher, and Khasiem Berkeley Henderson all of Troy, NY, Sharia (Martin) Sanders of Los Angeles, CA, Ruffus “Pop” (Dashelle) Yates of Albany, NY, Malik Yates of San Franciso, CA, and Noah Graham of Clearwater, FL. Five Great Grandchildren: Jazell Nelson of Troy, NY, DeShariay, and Kendall Yates of Albany, NY, Anthony Caraway, King and London Sanders of Los Angeles, CA. Four Brothers: Ray (Beverly) Turman, Russell Tucker, Raphael (Linda) Tucker of Albany, NY, Roy Smith of Mt. Cormick, SC, Larry (Alesha) Smith of Chicago, IL. Four Sisters: Deborah (Vincent) Smith of Atlanta, GA, Mary Ann (Aaron) Mursier of Augusta, GA, Sheila Perrin of Mt. Cormick, SC, and Maggie Banks of Washington, DC. Along with a host of family members. As well as In-Laws and Some Special Friends: Clem McKnight, Fred Daniels, Rev. Alton Franklin, and the Late Thomas Palmer, David Wall, Leon Wilson and Al Davis.
Rufus was predeceased by his parents Emily and John J. Tucker, father Roy Smith, and Longtime Companion the Late Willie B. Quinn.
