Nicola Sherriffe, passed away suddenly on Feb. 24, 2023. She was the daughter of Garfield Sherriffe & Jenicy Brown from Oracabessa, Jamaica, the mother of Aisha Smith & Jahaira Smith, fiancé of Marlon Cotterell.

Nicola was an ambitious and hard-working person. Prior to migrating to the United States, she attended Moneague College in Saint Ann, Jamaica where she obtained a degree in Hospitality & Tourism. Once she came to the USA, she continued her education by attending BOCES where she received her diploma as an LPN. She also attended Hudson Valley Community College and received her Associate Degree in Business Management. Over the years Nicola worked for many different nursing facilities, however, her longest career job (19+ years) was at Good Samaritan Lutheran Home in Delmar, NY. Her most recent job was at Green Meadows Nursing Home, Catskill NY. While working as a nurse Nicola continued her education and in July 2022, she received her RN degree from Azure College in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.

Despite her busy schedule working full time, attending college and taking care of her entire family, Nicola managed to start her own business alongside her fiancé, Marlon. The up and coming One Dream Jamaican Bar and Lounge.

Nicola loved being a nurse; however, her passion for the opportunity to own and manage her own business was exciting and fulfilling to her. She loved being at the bar, interacting with her friends and customers. Even after a double shift at work she would show up to work at the bar happy and smiling.

Nicola was the pillar of the family, both her biological and Scream Family (Scream Queen). Nicola had the most beautiful smile, and Oh boy! she loved smiling! Even at the end she was smiling. No matter how tired she was, if something needed to be done, cooked, cleaned, etc., she would find the strength and energy to get it done. She loved cooking and baking. Her favorite motto was “stay tough, be strong”. Nicola you were one of a kind, heaven has truly gained an angel.

Nicola was preceded in death by her grandparents Victor & Hyacinth Sherriffe, Mavis Hines & Joshua Brown; aunt Georgia Allen; uncle Valentine Brown; and Scream Family Anthony Dias.

She is survived by her loving daughters Aisha Smith & Jahaira Smith; fiancé Marlon Cotterell; parents Garfield Sherriffe, Jenicy Brown; sisters Talis Sherriffe-Higgins (Reynaldo), Kashiane Barnes, Pilar Sherriffe; nephews Zyin & Kiaser; nieces Kayla, Milani, Aleksandra; aunts Johanna Grange (Philbert), Dacia Sherriffe, Vanessa (Filmore), Marcia (Patrick); uncles Winston Sherriffe, Delroy Sherriffe, Deon, Leon, Winston, Mark; best friend Dimps McLean; Scream Family Albany, NY & Denhamtown, Jamaica; and a host of cousins, family and friends.

The last verse of the poem Remember Me by Margaret Mead is a tribute to how Nicola would like us to remember her.

“Remember me in your heart, your thoughts, your memories of the times we loved, the times we cried, the times we fought, the times we laughed. For if you always think of me, I will never be gone.”Margaret Mead
