Our dear mother...MODDY, Ms. Jackson
Maudestine Jackson (affectionately known as “Moddy” and “Ms. Jackson”) passed away on December 27th, 2020 after succumbing to a lengthy debilitating illness.
Moddy was born on November 30th, 1933 in Florence, SC to Hannah and Simon James of Florence SC.
Moddy was a dedicated employee for the state of New York for the better part of 40 years. She worked as a keypunch operator as well as a Shop Steward for CSEA for the department of Taxation and Finance. In 1992 she retired, and her retirement was so spectacular that each floor was in unison in waving goodbye saying farewell to her as she entered her limo with roses, champagne, and tickets to her favorite pastime, OTB. In addition, you could see her friendly face as an elevator operator at The Egg at the Empire State Plaza during the early stages of their opening. She was also very active in political issues and prided herself in giving her time to work on election days at polling stations.
Moddy was a classy lady known for her delicious goodies, such as fried dough and icies for the neighborhood children, an expression of her generosity and love for her neighbors. It was a delight if you were lucky enough to experience her mouth-watering “Crowd Pleaser” cakes or her delicious miniature fruity cheesecakes that she’d personally deliver along with her hand-made holiday decorations and slippers during the Christmas season. She would go all out to please her children and they believed in Santa Claus because she’d always put extra effort into making magic during the holidays.
Moddy also had a green thumb which helped to enhance the beautification of Albany Housing’s Creighton Storey Homes on Third Avenue for over 30 years and enjoyed spreading that to the Albany community garden as well. The employees of Albany Housing Authority would often show her area of flowers to others as inspiration for their own beautification projects.
Moddy was a strong believer in the Lord and had been a generous long-time member/contributor to the First Church of Albany and various organizations.
Moddy was preceded in death by her father Simon James, her mother Hannah James, her brother John Douglas Sr., her sister Mary Douglas (Vernal), her brother Nathaniel James, and her brother Simon James Jr. She is survived by her sister Georgia James (Hodge). Her legacy endures through her Children, Adrienne, Kevin, and Derek, her Grandchildren, Lynette, Asha, Itton, Brian, Kyle, Yahmanie, Sion and Mason, 10 Greatgrandchildren, and 2 Great-greatgrandchildren. She is also celebrated by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family (both by blood and by choice).
Our family will like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, posts, and other offers of condolences during this time of bereavement. We appreciate the love and generosity shown to us.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to SL McLaughlin Funeral Home LLC, 1226 Broadway, Albany, NY 12204.
