Harriett Sue Chalmers, 93, died peacefully in her sleep at home in
Albany, NY on Thursday, January 28, 2021 after a short illness.

Sue was born in Halifax, Virginia on July 22, 1927 to the late John Henry
Foy and Harriett Empsey Barksdale Foy. She married William (Bro)
Chalmers in April of 1946. Out of their union two children were born,
William and Michael. In 1949 the family moved to Albany, NY during
the great northern migration in search of better economic
opportunities. When Sue started working for the A&P Tea Company in
the late 1950’s she was their first African-American cashier in Albany.
She worked for the A&P until the early 1980’s. She was also the
bookkeeper for Chalmers’ Gulf Service from the 1960’s to 1980’s and
corporate secretary for Chalmers’ Parking and Leasing from the mid
1980’s until her retirement in 1998.

From an early age Sue was a member of the Banister Hill Baptist Church
in Virginia, and until she passed, a member of Union Missionary Baptist
Church in Albany.

Sue loved her family and friends and often reminisced about her
parents, siblings and friends growing up in Virginia. She would tell
stories of her family being outdoors in the summer while she looked
out from the inside. She did not like bugs! She loved to shop and it
showed in her sense of style. Each morning until 2 weeks ago, she
emerged from her bedroom with full make-up and jewelry.

She was predeceased by her parents: John Henry and Harriett; siblings
Annabelle, Myron, John Henry Jr., Pleasant, George, Phoebe and Alvin.
She enjoyed traveling and did so extensively with her church and her
family. She finally made it to Hawaii only to realize she did not like
being surrounded by water. Left to celebrate her life are her sons
William Chalmers (Linda) and Michael Chalmers (Charlie), her beloved
sister Nevern Smith (Gerald), cousins and a host of nieces, nephews,
great nieces and great nephews whom she dearly loved.
