Geneva Nick Obituary

Geneva C. Nick, affectionately known as “GG”, peacefully departed this earthly life transitioning from labor to reward on Sunday, September 12, 2021.  It’s poetic that Ms. Geneva’s sunset was on the Lord’s Day, she gave her life to the Lord and served Him well by serving others.  She always had a “Send Me, I’ll Go” spirit. Born May 21, 1928, in Oxford, Mississippi to the late Smith Cancer and Lula Fuller, she brought much joy to this world.

Geneva was raised by her grandmother “Momma” and attended school in Abbeville, Mississippi.  A chip off the old block, from childhood, Geneva devoted her time to caring, loving and helping others Including her husband of over 50 years, the late Leonard Nick.  Geneva met and married Leonard in 1972 when she joined the Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Oxford, Mississippi.  She answered the call to serve and she did faithfully, on the Ushers Board, the Mother’s Board and in the Choir.  She was in service at Greater St. John until she moved to Albany, NY and placed her membership at The Metropolitan NTM Baptist Church.  Still serving she was a member and former president of the Edna L. Hamilton Mission Ministry.  When Pastor Johnson came to Metro, a few senior members thought he was too young.  After hearing Pastor preach, teach and sing, let’s just say Pastor’s picture hangs on the wall between Dr. Martin Luther King and President Barak Obama.  She absolutely loved Pastor and Lady Johnson.

Mother Geneva’s Ministry far exceeded the walls of Metropolitan or Greater St. John.  In fact, she wore many hats.  She was a nurse and at times a doctor.  She was a Community Activist, Evangelist, a Missionary, Teacher, Cook and Chief Bottle Washer and that was just as a mother, wife and friend.  She too fed many with one loaf and never thought it robbery to go without so someone else didn’t have to. But God!  He always provided.

Professionally, Mrs. Nick worked as a Domestic and later for the Department of Health in Oxford, Mississippi for over 35 years, in those times, that was unheard of.

Mother Nick loved the Lord, her family and being a Cancer.  Not just a member of the Cancers, she proudly announced “I’m The First.”  She adored Worship.  She lived it and loved it because she loved the Lord.  She enjoyed dressing in her Sunday Best, listening to Gospel music, and hearing God’s voice through The Living Word!  In mother you saw Christ, in us she saw our best even when we were at our worst.  That’s Love! That was Mother Geneva Nick!

Welcoming her in the gates of Heaven are her three children, Marrietta (Sylvester) Malone, Robert (Dorothy) Goolsby and Georgia Mae Byers, her husband Leonard Nick, Her siblings, twin brother Eugene Cancer, D.C. Cancer, I.C. Cancer, Gaston Cancer, Sr., Maggie Joiner, Greenberry Payne, Everleen (Jack) Wiley.

Celebrating her life, legacy and love are her four grandchildren that came to live her from the ages, Six five four and two, Melvin Cancer, Terresa Byers, Eldridge Byers, Ronald Byers; two great grands that she helped raise, Jala Moore, Ronnya Byers; her sister Deaconess Mary Lewis; sister-in-love, Kathleen Cancer; 15 Grand Children, 23 Great Grands and 16 Great Great Grands and a host of nieces, nephews and .  To God Be The Glory!
