On August 19, 2021, on her 91st birthday, surrounded by loved ones Fannie Hurst went peacefully to reside with the Lord.
Fannie was born in Morton, GA, to Odell and Nancy Mayfield. Fannie accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her savior at a very young age at Broad River Baptist Church. Biblical Principles was a guidepost for her life. Hard work, clean living and praising the Lord was her banner. As a young woman she moved to Greenville, S.C., and married Hubert Lee Hurst at the age of 19, and they had four children. The family moved to Boston, MA, in 1960 where they became members of New Hope Baptist Church. Fannie raised her children in New Hope and was a faithful member serving on The Missionary and Usher Board as well as many committees until she relocated to Troy, NY in 2016. Fannie had been affiliated with The Salvation Army through her children for over 20 years and became a Salvation Army Soldier in 2018. She served the Lord faithfully, serving, praying and praising the Lord her entire life.
Fannie’s outgoing nature and work ethic gave her the opportunity to be successful at any job she worked on. Her model was if you going to be a toilet cleaner than you make sure you are the best toilet cleaner in the world. It didn’t matter if she was working in a factory, in someone’s home, in the hospital or at the bank she had the same pleasant attitude. This not only made life easier for her but made it possible for her to raise her four children and pass on the attitude to them, so that they also were able to be successful at whatever they put their hand to. In 1995 she retired from Boston City Hospital and The Federal Reserve Bank.
Fannie had a profound influence on many people because she loved deeply. To Ma Fan it didn’t matter who you were, what you had or where you came from, she treated you with the utmost respect. She was a wise woman, who was able to give you a pull-up in such a sweet way that you didn’t realize for days that she was telling you that you need to get your stuff together.
Fannie was nana to so many people that it just became her name. The love that she lavished on her grands and God given grands was so extravagant that it was stamped in their hearts. During the last days of her life when she was not able to do for herself they lavished that love back onto her.
Fannie is proceeded in death by her husband Hubert Lee Hurst
