Angela “Poochie” Lester Helms, a beacon of love, laughter, and light, was called home on October 15, 2025, in Albany, NY. Born on April 11, 1964, in the Bronx, NY, she was the cherished daughter of the late Lala Lester and Allen Smalls.
Angela was predeceased by her beloved parents, her brothers Michael Garner, Martin Lester, and William Lester, and her treasured daughter Anndrea Purdy. She leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience in her children: Anasia (Marc) Tillman, Craig (Catie) Helms, Calvin Helms, Lala (Ben) Purdy, and bonus daughter MaKeeba Helms. She also leaves behind her devoted siblings Sherry Lester, Robert Lester, and Darrell Lester; her grandsons Ethan, Cameron, and Noah; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles who adored her deeply.
Angela graduated from Walton High School in the Bronx in 1982 and later attended SUNY Albany, where she met and married the late George Craig Helms. She built a beautiful life and a growing family, making Albany her home for over four decades. Later she welcomed two more daughters with Christopher Purdy.
Angela's life was defined by her unshakable commitment to caring for others. A life-long nurturer, she worked in early childhood development before dedicating 20 years to being a foster mother. Specializing in keeping sibling groups together, she opened her home and heart to dozens of children who found safety, love, and family under her roof. Even after retiring from foster care, Angela continued her dedication to the next generation as a Security Monitor at Albany High School, where she uplifted students and staff alike until her final days.
To know Angela was to know joy. She wasn’t just a good time — she was a great time. Whether she was dancing, cracking jokes, bargain shopping, or planning a spontaneous trip to Atlantic City, Angela lit up every space she entered. She brought people together, not just with her infectious energy but with intention — even starting “Appreciation Days” within her family to ensure that everyone felt seen, valued, and celebrated.
Angela lived her life exactly as she loved — fully, joyfully, and with fierce devotion to those she called family. She also had a special place in her heart for her beloved fur babies: Belle, Bluebird, Fatty, and Ears, who brought her comfort, companionship, and plenty of laughter.
A celebration of her life will be held at 62 central Ave Albany NY, where all who loved her are welcome to gather, laugh, share stories, and honor the incredible woman she was.
May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may her memory forever be a blessing.
