Alice M. Simmons

Alice Marie (Wood-Edmonds) Simmons passed away peacefully at her home early morning on Monday, April 20, 2020. Alice was born on March 2, 1942 in Halifax, V.A. She was the daughter of the late C.Marie Edmonds-Atkins and late Harold (Thewt) Wood, raised by step father, late Robert E. Atkins. 
Alice attended public school in Halifax, V.A., until the family moved to Albany, N.Y., where she continued her education at Philip Schuyler high school. In the early 70s, she attended EOC, where she was trained in the art of steganography. In 1972, Alice became a data entry operator for the Department of Education, Federal Aid, where she worked for 35 years, until retirement. 
Growing up in Virginia, she attended the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church with her grandmother, the late Maddie Edmonds-Petty and family, where she would sing “walk around heaven”, as her grandmother would play the organ. In early 1960s, after the family moved from Halifax to Albany, she later joined Bethel Baptist Church, under the pastor Brewington Stinney. She then moved her membership to the Sweet Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in Albany, N.Y., under the pastor Reverend Dr. Eljan J. Taylor Sr. Due to her declining health, she was unable to continue attending the beloved service. 
Alice’s greatest accomplishments were raising her two daughters, who she loved so dearly, her grandchildren, and great-grandchild. Her greatest joy was a good party and most recognized for her strut. She leaves to mourn, her one sister, Martha Anna “Margaret” Carrington, two daughters - Anne Marie Ellis and Barbara Simmons, one son-in law - Glendell Ellis, one adopted son-in law Pernell “Nasif Phillips, three grandchildren - Quiessence Phillips, Ashton Glen Ellis, Quadir Phillips, and one great grandchild - Jaylan Walters; one aunt - Daisy M. English of Maryland , one uncle - Larry Edmonds of Virgina, one nephew - Clyde W. Carrington Jr., one Godsister - Anne Greenlee, five  Godchildren - Chanté Hoke, Tina Samuels, Ethel Stanley, Kimberly Young, and Reverend C. Omarr Evans; her closest and dearest friends, Diane Young Smith, Nanabell Caldwell, Reezes and Valerie Campbell, Carl Johnson, Cynthia Carter, Linda K. Schou, and a host of nieces, nephews, and others family members.  
Alice Simmons is pre-deceased by her parents - C. Marie Edmonds-Atkins, Harold (Thewt) Wood, and Robert E. Atkins; three aunts - Signora Brown, Mary C. Simpson, Annie E. Simpson; three uncles - Joshua Brown, Emmanuel Simpson, and Bailey Edmonds.
